Where Acura Cars Come From: Ownership, Manufacturing, and Production Insights
If you’re shopping for a luxury vehicle near New York City, there’s a good chance you’ve looked at the new or Certified Pre-Owned Acura lineup.
Are you wondering if Acura vehicles are made in the United States, or are you asking, “Does Honda make Acura?” The answer is yes — Honda makes Acura vehicles. Read on to learn more about who owns Acura, its history, and where popular East Brunswick vehicles like the TLX and MDX are made.
Understanding Acura Ownership: Who Makes Acura Cars?
Honda Motor Company is the parent company that owns the Acura brand, and the history of Acura is very much part of the history of Honda. Here’s a quick overview.
In 1981, a luxury-level Honda sedan was in its early planning stages. Rather than introduce the new sedan as part of the Honda lineup, Honda executives thought it would make more sense to create a separate brand — a new division that caters to drivers with luxury tastes. “Acura” was announced in 1984, and just two years later, 60 Acura dealerships officially opened. Within the first year of the brand’s launch, Acura sold over 50,000 vehicles and opened the doors to 150 Acura dealerships.
Needless to say, Acura was a major success — so much so that brands like Toyota and Nissan introduced their own luxury brands. Acura continued to grow and expand with models like the Acura NSX, which was the first car in the 1990s to be made using aluminum. Today, Acura remains a driving force in the luxury segment and has several concept and future vehicles in the works that aim to reshape automotive technology as a whole.
Acura Manufacturing & Assembly: Where Are Acura Vehicles Made?
Most of the Acura models, including the TLX, RDX, MDX, and Integra are made in North America. Acura has roots throughout Ohio. The Marysville plant has the largest production capacity of the four locations in the state. There’s also a plant in East Liberty, Anna, and Russells Point, Ohio.
- The Marysville plant manufactures the Acura Integra and the luxury Acura TLX. (Marysville is also where you’ll find the Acura performance manufacturing center, and this is where the Acura NSX supercar is produced.)
- The East Liberty plant manufactures the Acura RDX and Acura MDX luxury SUVs.
- The Anna plant makes engines and drivetrain components.
- The Russells Point plant makes transmissions and related components, including the four-wheel drive systems.
